In Thomas Hanna’s work known as Somatics, he revealed 8 primary practices that would address all of the major movement patterns in the body and keep them connected to the nervous system so that full range and control of movement would be maintained around every joint in the body. They are foundational to the blending of Somatics and Yoga in the work and healing of SomaYoga Therapy to elicit freedom and enliven core stability.
He called the collective 8 practices: The Cat Stretch, as he felt they emulated the slow, intentional care a cat takes when it meticulously moves and stretches each part of it’s body upon waking, and reconnecting itself.
This workshop will help us do the same – wake up and enliven our entire inner landscape as we wake up to the next season ahead – the preparation of the body to go into the colder seasons without having to stay contracted inward. Learn how to draw into the body to release outward with more freedom and function.
We will have the opportunity to experience this practice together in class, and then get to practice it at home with videos and audios. By the end of the workshop, you will have this deeply satisfying and supportive 15-30 minute morning and/or evening practice that will help you stay pain-free and tension-free from the inside out.
“This practice has been magical for me over the last eight years since I have been practicing SomaYoga, which includes the Cat Stretch sequence. Prior to SomaYoga I had chronic SI joint pain, low back spasms, plantar fasciitis, and tight hips even though I had practiced yoga for most of my adult life. I am more mobile, stable, and strong! These tools are priceless.” Ann B.
